Last night's match at Kidsgrove was a bit of a disaster, with Fenton going down by 3-1 in a match we had high hopes of winning. I didn't see too much of the games on boards 3 & 4, but when I looked at Jack's game on board 3 he was a Queen down, so no prizes for guessing the result there !!! Ken got what he claimed was a lucky win on board 4, but better to be a lucky player than a good player I always say. That put the score at 1-1, but then Mycle went gung ho on board 2 and played an unsound sacrifice and lost shortly afterwards. I was in a drawn position on board 1 but then lost concentration and left a piece en prise, losing the game. All in all a pretty disastrous evening. Club Championship Results
There were 2 matches played in the Club Championship last night, with Glyn drawing with Dylan, and Mycle beating Stuart. Dylan is now level with Chris H. at the top of the table on 7.5 points, with both of them having played all of their games. Glyn is on 5 points, with 3 games still to play. If he wins all of these he will take the Championship by half a point. He plays Ernie next week in the first of these games.
Birmingham Rapidplay
Chris Hankey played in the Major Section of the Birmingham Rapidplay yesterday, finishing joint 9th out of 30, with a score of 4/7. An excellent performance as he was ranked number 20 at the start, so very well done to him.
South Lakes Chess Congress
I have just managed to find the results of last weekend's South Lakes Chess Congress online. Chris Hankey finished 8th out of 20 in the Intermediate Section, with a score of 2.5/5. Dylan Whitney finished joint 3rd out 24 in the Minor II Section, with a score of 3.5/5.
Dylan Qualifies For UK Schools Chess Challenge Giga Final
Congratulations to Dylan Whitney on his performance today at the UK Schools Chess Challenge Mega Final in Bristol. A score of 4.5/6 saw him take 5th place out of 42 competitors, just a point behind the winner, and a place in the Giga Finals being held over the weekends of 9th/10th July (Northern) and 23rd/24th July (Southern). I don't know whether he will be playing in the Northern or Southern Section - I'm sure he'll let us know !! If he gets through the Giga Finals he will qualify for the Challengers event in Daventry over the weekend of 17th/18th September. His final goal will then be to qualify for the Tera Final being held at Blenheim Palace in October.
You can view the standings in this weekend's competition here - https://chess-results.com/tnr639253.aspx?lan=1&art=1&rd=6. Dylan actually drew with the winner in his round 4 game. His only loss was in round 5 against the eventual runner-up.
Go Dylan !!!!!
Fenton Win At Stafford
Fenton chalked up their first win in the South Cheshire Shield last night, beating Stafford by 2.5 - 1.5, despite being out-rated by a total of 484 points. A draw for Chris H. on board 1, plus wins on boards 2 and 3 by Mycle and Dylan, against higher rated opponents, sealed the win. Unfortunately, Jack, on board 4, was unable to replicate his win in his previous match. Click here to view the match score card - https://ecflms.org.uk/lms/node/97969.
