Fenton 'A' may well have blown their chances of retaining the Division 3 title following a 2.5 - 1.5 defeat at Newcastle 'D' last night. We now only have one match left and Stafford 'B' can overhaul us by a point if they win both of their two remaining matches. We can only hope that we win our final match and that Stafford drop points somewhere. Draws on Boards 1, 2 and 4 for Rob, Steve and Neal weren't enough as Geoff, playing on Board 3, blundered a piece away and the inevitable loss ensued. In another match taking place at Newcastle, the No Hopers held Newcastle 'E' to a 2 - 2 draw. Wins for Robert West and Steven Walley on Boards 3 and 4 gave us a share of the points. However, Mike Smith, playing on Board 1, deserves a special mention for an outstanding performance against an opponent graded 73 points higher than him before losing on time. Skippy on the other hand doesn't deserve a mention of any sort as he allowed himself to fall for a back rank mate in his match on Board 2 !! You can click here to view the full match score card.
